travel europe italy liguria the cinque terre

Five villages make up the Cinque Terre (five lands); Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.
These villages isolated along the cliffs of the Mediterranean make this destination a "must see."
On our two visits, in 1994 and 1999, we stayed in Santa Margherita Ligure to the north and took the train into the Cinque Terre.
In 2017, we rented apartments and stayed four nights in Riomaggiore.
The other alternatives for visitors are pretty much limited to boats and a famous hiking trail that some say tends to disappear intermittently.
The Cinque Terre is one of those magic places you say you'll always want to come back to... even with the growing crowds.
